Stretch every drop of water


Water is critical for growth and production of all crops. Urban growth, intensive agricultural production and environmental concerns exert increasing demands for available water.

Therefore there is increasing awareness of the need to manage irrigation correctly in order to optimize the quality and yield of the produce, minimize costs of production and avoid adverse environmental impacts. Getting the most from an irrigation system requires accurate scheduling of water applications and efficient use of equipment.

 

Irrigation scheduling is used to determine when to irrigate a crop and how much water to apply. The efficiency of a system can subsequently be expressed in terms of the uniformity of the water application and the accuracy of scheduling. The application efficiency is the ratio of water reaching the crop canopy to the volume of water exiting the emitter.

The Floppy Sprinkler has been independently tested by the South African Water Research Commission in conjunction with the South African Agricultural Research Council. Their findings substantiated the average application efficiency of the Floppy Sprinkler to be 90%. The Floppy Sprinkler is a low pressure sprinkler, operating from as low as 2 Bar pressure, which is 42% less pressure needed than a standard 3.5 Bar impact sprayer. The lower pressure needed for the Floppy Sprinkler results in an energy saving of 15% - 25%. Due to a lack of small droplets, loss of water through evaporation is minimal resulting in a direct 29% water saving.

The Floppy Sprinkler is an overhead sprinkler which wets the total root area of a plant. This eliminates localized development of roots and encourages roots to spread over a larger area. A large root zone gives a plant a good anchor and a larger area for water and nutrient absorption. Therefore ancillary rainfall can be used more effectively and with the Floppy Sprinkler system it is possible to stretch every drop of water to the maximum!
