Reaping the Floppy Irrigation Rewards!
CHRIS BARNARD – Well-known farmer from Rustenburg is literally reaping the rewards of what he has sown.
Barnard who has been involved with intensive farming for the last 20-years is confident that correct irrigation scheduling forms a fundamental part to obtaining optimum yields.
Farmers from all over the country and even outside the borders of South Africa as far as Tanzania and Egypt are flocking to his farm to view his Floppy Irrigation System.

The Floppy Sprinkler permanent Overhead Cable System enables Barnard to irrigate his cabbage pastures with less water at more frequent intervals. Barnard says that since planting the cabbage he hasn’t had any difficulties in establishing the cabbage plants. “I use tensiometers in order to effectively schedule my next irrigation cycle. I usually irrigate 8mm three times a week but will sometimes irrigate up to 16mm when it is really warm but never more than that.” says Barnard.
Even though it is possible to apply fertilizers and pesticides through the Floppy System, Barnard prefers to apply the fertilizers by hand because of the concentration of the cabbage roots. Barnard says that he applies a partly organic mixture and M.A.P. as a phosphate supplement 40% before planting and the rest 28 days after planting.
Barnard planted 33 000 cabbage plants per ha. “I believe we will definitely harvest at least 70% which will give me a yield of at least 80 tons per ha” Barnard estimates.
According to Barnard an effective irrigation system managed correctly can increase yield. He says, “Good seed-bed preparation, chemigation and fertigation are also important”.
The Floppy Sprinkler Overhead Cable System is ideally suited to vegetables, lucerne, maize, wheat and other crops where tillage practice favours an overhead system. The cultivated area is uncluttered, as the system has no infrastructure on the ground and implements, trucks and tractors can move freely under the system.

Substantial water, energy and labour savings coupled with increases in yield make the Floppy Sprinkler system one of the most efficient irrigation systems available on the market today.
